Commanders’ Trey Amos Among 30 Unsigned Second-Round Picks

30 of 32 rookies drafted in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft are still unsigned – that includes Washington Commanders cornerback Trey Amos.

The first two picks in the second round—Cleveland Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger and Houston Texans wide receiver Jayden Higgins—are the only ones who signed their deals. Both received fully-guaranteed contracts, marking a first for second-round picks under the new collective bargaining agreement (ratified in 2020).

It’s unclear what the next step is for the remaining 94 percent of the second-round class. Los Angeles Chargers receiver Tre Harris provided a glimpse of what could be in store, sitting out of training camp after rookies reported on Saturday.

The Chargers had the earliest camp date of any team in the league due to being in the Hall of Fame Game in the NFL’s preseason “Week 0.” They will face the Detroit Lions, whose rookies are due at camp on Wednesday.

Among the Lions’ rookies is second-round pick and guard Tate Ratledge, who also hasn’t signed his deal.

Amos, the 61st pick in the draft, emerged as one of the Commanders’ standout performers during summer workouts. He was expected to start opposite Marshon Lattimore in a defense that ranked 22nd in EPA allowed per dropback play a year ago.

Second-year player Mike Sainristil had a solid rookie campaign while filling in at outside corner. However, his size and instincts make him a better fit in the slot, where he played during Michigan’s national championship-winning season in 2023.

“His technique is there,” Lattimore said of Amos following a June minicamp session. “From right now what I see as far as his technique, he looks complete. He’s a rookie, and it’s early, but throughout the season, I feel like he’s going to keep it up and get better as the season goes [on], and I’m excited to see how he turns out.”

The Lions selected corner Dennis Rakestraw Jr. with the 61st pick in the 2024 Draft. His four-year, $6.5 million contract came with $3.4 million guaranteed, including the first two years and a $1.5 million signing bonus.

Spotrac’s 2025 NFL rookie scale says that Amos’ deal will be worth $7.3 million over four years, including a $1.3 million salary in year one.

Amos made stops at Louisiana, Alabama and Ole Miss during his college career. He recorded 50 tackles, 13 pass deflections, three interceptions, and a forced fumble during his final season at Ole Miss.

Commanders general manager Adam Peters said the night that Amos was drafted that the team had a first-round grade on him and considered taking him ahead of first-round tackle Josh Conerly Jr.

All of the Commanders’ other draft picks – Conerly Jr., Jaylin Lane, Kain Medrano, and Jacory Croskey-Merritt – have already signed their contracts.
